Wisbech is a market town on the River Nene in the Fenland of Lincolnshire. During the period of this study it had a busy but tidal port. At low tide ships lying in the river would take the ground, some lying over at considerable angles. It says something for the robustness of those ships that they could frequently sustain such treatment.
