On February 3, 1911, Amundsen wrote, "Great excitement ... When we came down to our vessel this morning, instead of our dear old Fram alone, there were - two vessels at the ice edge. The latest arival was the barque - Terra Nova." At that time Amundsen was setting up the base camp for his successful attempt to reach the South Pole. The Terra Nova was supporting Scott's expedition.
The Fram was originally built in 1892. She was designed by the well known Norwegian/Scottish designer Colin Archer for Fridtjof Nansen's 1893 to 1896 Arctic Expedition when she was deliberately frozen in to drift across the Arctic with the pack ice. For Amundsen's Antarctic Expedition she underwent a major refit where the bows were raised to give more room and make her drier in a seaway, and she was re-rigged as a three masted topsail schooner.
