| The American Export Lines C-2 Freighter
'Exiria'. Oil on canvas (915 x 600)mm Depicted in the North Atlantic during WW2. Because of her speed 'Exiria' was often ordered to make passages without the protection given by a convoy. Understandably when sailing alone her Master would drive her pitilessly in all weathers. Someone who sailed in her described one voyage in which, "Captain Berg drove the ship hard from Liverpool back to Jersey City, and was leaping, pounding, and shuddering all the way. We came in with a corugated bottom, floating on the tanktops of the first three holds." |
